Hi... my name is lia, I am working in garment company and studying at STIBA IEC Jakarta, I would like to ask you about how to learn English as a second language? I usually used English in office and in my campus, but I have a problem with grammatical and writing proces, I really want to improve my English, because I have plan to study in UK for the next two years.

Reply from Aim

HI Lia,

Firstly, I think your English is already good, so you probably understand what it takes to learn the language successfully.

As we've mentioned numerous times here, practice is the most important thing. However, your goal is to reach university level English so I would recommend that you seek the help of professional English instructors. While writing endless essays is a good idea, you will improve much faster if you have someone to give advice and, importantly, correct your writing. If you have someone correcting your writing, you can then study your own mistakes and try to learn from them. Once you are aware of te kind of mistakes you make, you can learn to check your work for this kind of mistake or, even better, not make the same mistake again!

You should also focus on increasing your academic vocabulary.

Aim offers highly effective English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses especially designed for Indonesians who plan to study overseas. Contact us if you'd like to find out more

I hope this help. Thanks for the question,

i want study grammar, may be here is its place

Reply from Aim

Actually, maybe Aim is not the place to study grammar!!

You will learn grammar at Aim, but you will not even notice that you are learning it! We beleive that studying grammatical theory and doing endless practice exersizes is good, but there are far more effective (and enjoyable) ways of learning grammar.

We often meet people who have a very good understanding of grammatical theory but not much ability to actually produce (use) the language. At Aim, you will improve your grammar by studying in a communicative, interactive, comfortable atmosphere. This will give you the language and confidence to actually use the language acurately, far more important than a good theoretical knowledge.

Looking forward to meeting you soon, and to helping you improve your grammar!

Hi Shynta, thanks for your kind comments.

If you're interested in corporate language training from Aim, please call, email or buzz us with yahoo messenger. In the meantime, there are a few steps your company can take to introduce more English into the workplace.

  1. Introduce an 'English Day' at the office, where all communication (emails, phone, face-to face) is done in English
  2. Note down new words you hear or read, and share them with your friends at the office.... you could have a weekly 'vocab quiz'
  3. start reading the news and other information in English everyday. Have Jakarta Post in the office for everyone to read.
  4. Use the Internet. There are lots of free websites to help you with your business English.... see the 'links' page of this website for a list of suggestions.. Our current favourite comes from the BBC: www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/business/
  5. And, of course, taking a customised training program from a centre such as Aim can be a great investment for any business. Accurate, professional communication in English can increase customer satisfaction, increase sales, and ultimately increase your company's profit.

hello aim. I have a problem n need to be solved. the problem is how we can know the different between the using of that n which

Reply from Aim

Sometimes there is no difference, and the 2 words are interchangeable. e.g.

A computer is a thing that/which we use......

Jakarta is a city that/which is home to 10 million people etc.

Only 'which' has a question form:  Which city is it? Which one is it?

Question received on 2008-04-18 12:34:21

"why my feeling afraid to speaking with people" because i am afraid for wrong

Reply from Aim

It's a problem for all language learners, but is particularly common for Indonesians:  fear of making mistakes

There are several things you should know:

  • Making mistakes is the BEST way to learn a language, but you should try to learn from your mistakes

  • Nobody will laugh at you if you make a mistake. Nobody is perfect, and everybody makes mistakes

  • People will respect you for 'having a go', more than if you don't try at all.

  • Practice is the key, so you need to be brave and just give it a try. After you start using the language regularly (even if there are lots of mistakes) you will find that you will improve very quickly, and you will really start to enjoy using the language.

I hope this helps! If you need any more advice, let us know.
